Music is one of the most powerful forces in the world. It has the ability to bring people of diverse race, gender, religious, and life choices together in a unique way. Music is perhaps the ultimate communication medium. Not only does it entertain, it educates and enlightens. When artists and communities come together in partnership, they become powerful agents of change, alter the social landscape, and improve the human condition. There are some brilliant Northwest organizations such as Music Aid Northwest, Melodic Caring Project, and Gigs For Good, just to name a few, that use the power of music to do great things in the community.
Protosong.com is an organization that asks the million dollar questions, “What is the value of a song? How can that value be used for good?” One possible answer is a special online fundraising event that they launched at midnight on October 3rd.
Protosong brings music fans an exclusive playlist of unreleased songs from stellar independent Seattle artists over a two week period. Here’s the rub…fans choose what to pay for the music. The playlist is only available for purchase Oct. 3 to 17, and everyone who gives a minimum of one dollar can download the whole thing on Thursday, Oct. 18.
70 percent of what fans purchase will go towards helping provide clean water to people in developing nations. The rest of the funds will go to the artists who donated music for the project. Protosong.com pockets nothing. The not-for-profit group’s target goal is $25,000.
Participating artists include Noah Gundersen, Lemolo, Kris Orlowski, Ivan & Alyosha, The Young Evils, Mychal Cohen (Campfire OK), Motopony, Big Sur, This Providence, Carson Henley, The Cellar Door, Ethan Jennings, Mary Lambert, Joshua Montoya, Dearborn, Cold Water Theater, Smokey Brights, Edmund Wayne, Aubrey Logan, Teachers and Susy Sun.
The organization was started by a small group of college students from Seattle. Their online music and giving events are a platform for artists and fans to bring that change to a wider audience. Their philosophy is simple. Music – especially at a concert or festival – is inherently social. What starts as a very personal experience suddenly becomes magnified in the presence of others sharing that same moment.
Why water as the cause…
Water is an essential element for every human being. 1.3 billion people around the world lack access to clean drinking water, and 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation facilities and proper hygiene. Unsafe water causes 3.5 million deaths every year, and 84 percent of those who die are children. At Protosong, you can bring clean water to those who need it and get some brilliant music in return.
